Senate To Confirm Anti-Science Ryan Zinke as Secretary of the Interior

As a member of Congress representing Montana, Ryan Zinke has a history of voting to censor scientific research to prevent its use by the federal government. Just a few months ago, Zinke voted to prohibit the federal government from considering certain kinds of scientific studies, simply because the results of those studies suggest that the activities of coal, oil, and gas companies on public lands have substantial negative impacts.

Zinke has interfered with the ability of the Department of the Interior to make informed decisions, and has done so in order to protect the ability of fossil fuels corporations to make quick and easy profits that endanger public lands. What’s more, Zinke has repeatedly asserted that there is no scientific consensus on climate change, although the opposite is clearly the case. Why? Zinke’s top financial contributor in the 2016 election was Oasis Petroleum, a company that says it is “focused on the acquisition and development of unconventional oil and natural gas resources”.

This history of anti-science corruption makes Zinke a remarkably unsuitable choice to become the next Secretary of the Interior. Yet, Donald Trump chose to appoint Zinke to that position.

Yesterday, the United States Senate voted to move forward toward confirming that appointment.

We can’t just blame the Senate Republicans for this corrupt vote against science and against the public interest, however. 15 Senate Democrats crossed over to join the pro-Trump Republicans in order to approve cloture to confirm Ryan Zinke to lead the Interior Department.

The names of these dirty Democrats in the U.S. Senate are: Michael Bennet, Christopher Coons, Catherine Cortez Masto, Joe Donnelly, Dianne Feinstein, Martin Heinrich, Heidi Heitkamp, Tim Kaine, Joe Manchin, Claire McCaskill, Christopher Murphy, Bill Nelson, Jon Tester, Tom Udall, and Mark Warner.

With Democrats like these, who needs Republicans?

It’s not too late to stop the confirmation of Zinke as Secretary of the Interior. If one of these Democrats is your U.S. senator, call this morning through the congressional switchboard at (202) 224-3121 to urge a vote against Zinke’s final confirmation.
